Setlist - Show 516 - Luggage Store Gallery, San Francisco,CA - Sept.24, 2009

Instagon #516
Sept. 24, 2009
Luggage Store Gallery, San Francisco,CA
[NOISE TRIO]

Introducion
Dueling Tables,
Evil Jazz 23,
Extra Luggage Fee,
Banana Man

LOB (bass),
DR. OBLIVIOUS (toys/microphone, the minimalist),
FREE FARGO (metal source, effects pedals/antelope specialist)

Since moving to Northern California Instagon has played annually at the Luggage Store Gallery for the OUTSOUND EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC SERIES hosted by Rent Romus of Edgetone Records. This was our 4th appearance as Instagon at this space. The space is a beautiful gallery near the corner of 6th St on Market Street in the heart of San Francisco (half a block from the Warfield). There is a wicked steep staircase hidden behind a door that is covered by stickers, but once up the stairs you find a very nice space with hard wood floors and high ceiling with great natural reverb. We got up the stairs and started setting up for the show.. .upon arrival only Dr. Oblivious was confirmed to play.. .about half way thru the set up time, Free Fargo arrived at the show and we informed the door and Free at the same time that he would be playing in the set. He was surprised and excited.. and we continued to set up.
Noise Trio : 1 part metal and pedals, 1 part mic and toys, 1 part bass
This was Dr. O's 2nd time playing the Minimalist for the Noise Trio.. . he was also very entertaining to watch we were told afterwords.. he brought some of his own toys this time too.. Free was on the metal "ANTELOPE SPECIALIST" sign, and was playing very minimal noise.. nothing too power filled or
outbursting.. which set the tone for a very flowing and fun set from Instagon Noise Trio.. with Lob on bass.
The set was short and fun.. only a few pieces were attempted due mostly to the natural reverb in the room making it really hard for Lob to hear the bass he was playing.. and also we played late due to the opening act playing long.. so it was time to go home.. there was a really interesting version of "Evil Jazz 23" that was included in this set.. and also this was the first Noise Trio set to not include "To The Point" (for those that care)

This show was an art opening for our good friend CJ Borosque, and also a release party for the MUDWAGON CD compilation that was released on Edgetone Records a few months back. The venue was a really sweet little playhouse theater with a generous stage and nice seating for everyone. The rest of the acts that played that night were mostly jazz and avant garde sounds.. very mellow and loose.. Instagon did not come with that mindset ..we came to rock, and rock we did. The band was anchored by Free Fargo who was playing his 2nd Instagon show ever (the first one being May 2007) and who had not touched his drums in over 2 years. For someone who has not played in 2 years, he was awesome .
Also someone that had not played with Instagon in over a year was Rent Romus from Lords of Outland, he is always great to play with and also was responsible for putting this entire event together. It was a great time. The band was rounded out with Chad E. Williams playing guitar and Lob laying down the riffs. Out of the Invokation we teased "Red Planet Landing".. and then something different happened and I could not lay off the delay pedal.. and so something new was born that we called "The Flux" in honor of the room we played that night. Its a great tune and will probably start to appear in future garage jazz set lists. Over all we rocked really hard.. but also the regular tunes like Deamon's Tube, and Forward both were taken to very different places and not played in very regular way. So this set list appears to be filled with mostly alot of Instagon standards, but in fact they were not played very standard like at all..
Chad left early before we could take the group photo shot, so here is a shot of 3 of us from the end of the night .. from L: Bug spot where Chad should be, Free Fargo, Rent Romus, & Lob.

This show was ROCKIN' !! it was booked on a last minute request from Kenny at the Stag as he needed a show for this weekend and had no bands booked.. we took that challange and brought our good friends "(waning)" with us and it was really a swell time. After Waning played both Jim and Susan joined in the Deamon invokation of the night and we tore it up.. Susan is a really fun keyboardist and keeps getting better every time she plays with Instagon.
at the end of the night there was this silly drunk bald guy that kept yelling for us to play "SLAYER"! ..and so we busted out some psychotic speed metal for a moment to try to satisfy him.. but no luck.. he still wanted his Slayer..later he attempted to roust Lob into a fight but in the end pussed out and ran away like most bald drunk guys do when they have no friends to back them up

Also for this show we had a new drummer named Polar Bear, and he was really a great sport and seemed to have a good time. Even though we tried to kill him by playing a 90 minute set !!!! thanks to everyone.. it was a fun night of beer and rock n roll garage jazz.

This show rocked! and was a LOT of fun.. maybe the most fun show of the summer this year.. it was a beautiful night.. the breeze was up, the heat was down.. and we were outside in Davis,Ca. The first set was still during the daylight hours, and by the time the 2nd set was rolling it was getting dark. Last time we played this locaiton it was very dark, so this time we brough lights and it worked out just fine. It was great to play with Jaroba again. He had not played with the Deamon since the In The Flow festival in 2008. ..nearly a year ago. Mark Halverson was awesome, it was his 2nd time involved.. and Chad is now considered a veteran of Deamonology.

Most of the noise shows that have been done during this year (2009) we have been using the "noise trio" configuration .. but this set was back to the old school MIXER, and it was really really fun. It may be the only mixer set that Instagon does this year. At the end of the set, everyone had a moment of showcase solo time, this was the first time that had been done as well. The show was done as part of the official NF09 season starter, at Luna's Cafe where we feel at home.

Back again for what seems to be our annual summer appearance at THE STAG in Woodland, CA. Kenny & crew always are supportive and welcoming when we play there. When we first arrived we were planning to play last, but due to a mishap with sound equipment (that was fixed before the evening even got underway) we offered to play first, as we didnt really NEED a PA for our set.. and so it was on. The set started off rockin' and aggressive...a new friend in town freshly transplanted from the East Coast named Wayne Hamilton played with Instagon for his first time..and he seemed to have a good time. We rocked thru a garage jazz version of Rock Lobster, and then later in the set played "Under The Wheels" .. a song from the recent album by The Damned... this riff was fun and worked really well with the garage jazz flow that Instagon requires and will probably be seen more in future sets.
We were joined by friends from San Francisco, THE GRAVES BROTHERS DELUXE, and 2 lovely ladies from FRANCE who pimped out the night with heavy electro rock called HUMAN TOYS. All of the bands were awesome, GBD even played thier cover of "Shoot Down the Sun" by Boxcar Satan (one of Lob's favorites). It was a great time had by all. Many people enjoyed the tasty fresh tacos served at the taqueria around the corner from the Stag. Friends that came out to hang with us that night included Latitude11, Bob Xome, and the lovely miss Yvette. We also made new friends with cool people from the GBD crew, and as always Kenny made the night flow without any hassles.

SETLIST: Show 510 - GODWAFFLENOISEPANCAKE, San Francisco,CA 8-1-2009

Once again back to San Francisco for a late morning adventure with Grux and his rubber O Waffles! The GWNP show in SF has been a true consistent venue in SF for years and years now, holding shows on weekends, at noon and serving pancakes..its a great idea.. other cities should try it! This past Janurary the location that had been hosting the GWNP for so long, ARTSF, closed its doors and so the noisepancakes were on the move. The new location is in a flat in SF.. a bottom floor flat of a 2 or 3 story building. The performance space was small and dark, and people that were watching were forced to stand in the kitchen area and hallway. The PA has no monitors, so the sound is facing away from the performers, which makes it sorta tough to hear what you are doing..but the venue is small and the sound bounces around enough to make it work. This outing was the 4th installment with Instagon's newest face The Noise Trio
This time the trio would be Lob on bass, with Dr. Oblivous as "The Minimalist", and Bob (xome) Scott as "The Antelope Specialist". We played 3rd of 5 acts. The set started nice and quiet and grew slowly with awesome dynamics. It was a short performance, lasting perhaps 15 minutes...but it was very fulfilling and fun.

SETLIST: Show 509 - John Natsoulas Gallery, Davis,CA - July 30, 2009

We had a GREAT time a the Natsoulas Gallery this past week. It was a gorgeous night for live music outdoors! The weather was being kind, the venue was supportive of the music, and the people that came were there to listen...who could as for more?..well, a little light would be nice. The night started out just wonderful.. bright and beautiful with a slight breeze in the air. We invited our new friends VOLCANO SCHOOL to open up the show, and they TORE IT UP!. They rocked and made lots of new friends themselves..(John from Volcano School played recently with Instagon show 507). , although by the time we were playing it was quite dark and hard for anyone to see what we were doing or what we looked like. I had sorta expected this, so a brought a projector and tried to project some imagery over the Instagon show, but it didnt really work as well as i would have liked it to.
but that didnt stop us at all.. It was a well line up with Michael Otwell out in front on flute and saxophone, Chad E Williams on the guitar, and we were joined by our new friend from Fair Oaks,CA, Mark Halverson on the drums. Mark is someone that we had met on line recently and this was his first experience with Instagon live. He was really fun to play with and we expect to have more interaction with him in the near future. The set started into a pure jazz approach out of the invokation, and then attempted to pick up the bounce a little with Little Turtle and Deamons Tube.. but then returned back to the jazz scene with an attempt at Miles Davis's So What.. and then plunging into wicked garagejazz twist on Danny Elfman's Theme from The Simpons..which was the crowd pleaser of the night for sure.. we closed the set with a smooth adventure into Spider ...which was due to there being a spider in a sweet web on the railing of the rotunda we were playing in. Michael pointed it out, and so that's how the show was closed.

LIVE AT TRUE LOVE - new CD from TIF

NEW RELEASE FROM TIF

INSTAGON - LIVE AT TRUE LOVE
Recorded in August 2008
limited to 50 copies

This recording of Instagon (477) was done during the IN THE FLOW Festival in Sacramento,CA in 2008. It features Lob playing with long time friend Chip Conrad (CMU, Christian Kiefer Band), along with Guitarist Chad E. Williams, and Davis,CA horn player, Jaroba. This disc was produced and released during the 2nd Annual IN THE FLOW Festival that happened this year, it was limited to 50 copies, and we are happy to annouce the release for sale of the remaining discs.

This show outside and it was a hot day. We played set of mostly improvisational free jazz with a couple of Instagon garage jazz standards thrown in for good measure. It was originally billed to be a trio with only Chip and Chad, but at the last minute we added Jaroba to sit in for part of the set and it was really worth it. This is one of the last great happenings that went down at the True Love Cafe at its K Street Location.

Comps.Part 5: COMMUNAL DEATH DUCK-PINK PONY : covers, remixes, manipulations, & regurgitations

This is probably the most interesting compilation we have been involved with this year...here is the story..
COMMUNAL DEATH DUCK is a band from Alice, Texas who somehow became "friends" with Instagon via the magick of Myspace.com. Earlier in the year CDD put out a bulletin that they had this great idea for their next album...the idea was to collect a cd of covers and remixes fo their songs done by other artists. It seemed like a pretty good idea.. and so we explored their songs on the web and found one that was very interesting called "The Sunlight in Your Eyes".. it had a very simply bass line, and seemed like it could be pulled of with no warning with a group.. and it was on!
The first time the song appeared in the Instagon set was at Java Lounge in early January 2009. (show 489) .. but with a slight twist...as it was now in the first person and had become "The Sunlight in My Eyes".. the first time it was played, I knew it was gonna be something that we would play a lot more in the future. The very next show was at Marilyns on K St. in Sacramento (show 490) a week later and we played it again. (This is the recording that appears on the compilation).. a couple of days later we contacted CDD and told them we had already recorded 2 versions of this song, and that they could pick one of them for thier collection. Norberto from CDD was really excited .. he was expecting remixes and covers from friends and bands that they KNOW.. but here was one from someone that they didnt know.. ouf of the blue...and thus a friendship was born. The new CD "Communal Death Duck presents PINK PONY: covers, remixes, manipulations, & regugitations" is a collection of 21 different versions of songs by CDD from thier previous 3 CD's done by other bands and friends. Instagon appears doing "The Sunlight in My Eyes" from show 490, recorded at Marilyns on K, Sacramento, CA , January 14, 2009. It features surprizing fun vocals from Lob, and the song has become a regular in the shows so far this year.

SETLIST: Show 507 -IN THE FLOW FEST, Records (on Broadway), Sacramento,CA 6-27-09

This past weekend Instagon appeared as part of the 2nd annual IN THE FLOW festival in Sacramento. The festival is focused on exposure to the local Sacramento and northern California contemporary jazz innovators who grace our fair state. It was a great 3 day event with bands and poets performing in 5 different venues with all form of jazz being represented. Not to let the GARAGE JAZZ arm of the great beast called jazz be ignored.. INSTAGON appeared on Saturday afternoon at RECORDS (on Broadway). This year we appeared as a trio (last year it was as quartet). The show was sorta odd and hard to get started.. the venue was not really prepared for a live show.. but soon got it all dialed in.. and we we just happy to be in the air conditioning as it was 105+ outside in the Sacramento heat. As this show approached there was an issue with Instagon needing someone to play drums... and so we set off to the land called Craigs List. and returned with our new friend HORRIBLE JOHN.. who was just fun and wonderful to play with, not very horrible at all. Dan Quillan aka Art Lessing rounded out this trio.. he came armed with his guitar and a box of pedals and effects to make the ears drool. We played for about 35 minutes... it was really great.. thanks to everyone that came out to support it.

SETLIST: Show 506 - Luna's Cafe, Sacramento,CA 6-12-09

Instagon show 506 happened at Luna's Cafe in Sacramento, CA on Friday, June 12, 2009. This show was a decent show, but really louder than usual due to the sheer force and power of the drummer, Brody Cole. The evening started quiet and moody with a great set from Between Ravens & Crows from Orange County..mostly percussion and tribal instruments..very ambient and soothing. Very trance like.. it was nice. The next set was from a band from Roseville called Optic Seance (formerly Cryptic Vibe). They opened thier set with Pink Floyd's "Breath", and also played 3 more Floyd covers in thier set. It was only their 2nd show as as trio (formerly were a quartet) and they did pretty well and brought a lot of friends. Instagon rounded out the evening. The group was Lob with Chad Williams on guitar, Brody Cole on drums (from Eye of the Architect), and Susan Hunt (from waning) on keyboards. "The Sickeness" was the highlight song of the set. We played for 65 minutes. here is the set list:

Comps.Part 4: HAZE VOL. 9 - burattino vs pinocchio - free download!

Haze. Vol.9 - burattino vs pinocchio was released in the 2nd week of May 2009.
Instagon was invited to particpate in this collection from the net-label "HAZE Records". They occasionally release compilations with a theme as the foundation and concept behind them. This one was with theme burattino vs pinocchio; the story of the living puppet that wants to be a boy...the dual personalities of animate and in-animate living as one.
The track that was chosen for this collection is song called "Gemini". This Instagon original song has so far only been played twice. This recording comes from show # 309, recorded 11-24-2002 at the Liquid Den in Huntington Beach,CA and features some vocal antics from John Lurie (Anglo Jackson, Gasface), as well as guitar work from Don Rawlin, David Chetkin on drums, and Billy Trujillo on keys.

This release is available for FREE.. you can download it (and other great releases from Haze Records) with art work too, from this link:

This collection is really similar to the Ass Jazz comp., but with the lean a little more on the Jazz side, where the Ass Jazz comp. leaned a little harder on the metal side. The Instagon track that is included on this disc is "Orgone Collector" (show 482) recorded in October 2008 at the El Rincon, San Francisco,CA

this disc is available directly from Edgetone Records for $10.

SETLIST: Show 504 -Acoustic Set @ Deb n' Craigs BBQ Party

This show was unplanned and just sorta happened.. We have had Instagon shows at Deb n' Craig's home before, but Acoustic set are pretty rare in the world of this deamon. We knew Chad would be there, so we prompted him to bring an acoustic guitar, we came prepared with bass and mandolin. Stefano showed up and we let him jam the bass for a while while Lob played Mandolin.. but he soon had to leave and back to the bass it was for the deamon rider.. we played about 45 minutes.. it was windy.. the recording is really hard to listen to. Highlight was there was a sweet improv at the end of the session with Chad and Lob headhunting at each other within the theme from The Simpsons. [photo by Yvette Lucas]
